Why AirBNB?

It is not an easy decision to live in a stranger's house. But as the internet makes the world smaller, the more that we have to keep an open mind. So I tried AirBNB, a website where people can list, find and rent vacation homes in as many as 191 countries.

Twice the risk is trying it for the very first time outside the Philippines. I explored in Bangkok where I celebrated my birthday three months ago. The experience had been nothing scary so far. And I think more AirBNB experiences are coming.

Here are the reasons why I think every travel enthusiast should try AirBNB.

1. Real immersion

If your goal is to really to experience a country's culture, AirBNB accommodation does it better than 5-star hotels. If you get really welcoming hosts, you can watch how they cook, how they pray and see all else in their daily lives. Watching the neighborhood up close is definitely better than observing it from your hotel room.

2. New friendships

With AirBNB, relating to locals come effortless. Because hosts are generally welcoming and can speak English, memorable conversations isn't impossible.

3. Get your money's worth

You can get the comfort that you need without spending so much on luxurious hotels. AirBNB accommodations are built with the goal of providing you a homey atmosphere. And for those with full itineraries, why pay so much on a hotel when your time is mostly spent outside? The money you spent could be enough to fund your next trip.

4. Access to valued travel tips

Nobody knows the place than the locals and with your hosts around, you have instant access to important travel tips that you may not find anywhere else. Something like which streets to avoid, shortcut to tourist spots and where to find the cheapest pasalubongs. You'll never know. They have time walk with you to the market to taste a local dish.

5. Be a local

There's nothing more convenient to being a local than living with locals. Your most-anticipated Instagram post on how locals eat and sleep is very achievable given the genuine backdrop. That's hash tag #TheFeels

Being a lighting designer, my host set aside her Thai roots for her first AirBNB space to go minimalist and neat. When I saw Wei Immer online, I did not even browse for other accommodations. I just went ahead and book it. I'm happy to say that after our stay, we have no regrets.

Although situated in downtown Bangkok, the neighborhood is quiet. What's amusing is I was walking distance away from great restaurants and a train station. The house itself has a cafe, which has very relaxing interiors, on the ground floor too. The nearest MRT station can though can be a little bit of a hike but I know that a 15-minute walk is nothing for those with active lifestyles.
