Tea time with Jennylyn Mercado for her 6th album "Never Alone"7:17 AM
Jennylyn Mercado became the first ever female Grand Winner of Starstruck after performing Alicia Keys's "Fallin" in the full-packed Araneta Colesium during the finals night. Starstruck is an artista search which is known for featuring good-looking contestants but aside from her pretty face, Jennylyn showcased her singing talent.
We are so used to powerhouse belting from Regine Velasquez, Lani Misalucha, Sheryn Regis, Sarah Geronimo and a long list of talented singers then that we were in need of someone with the sweet tone. Jennylyn came and aside from her TV shows, movies and news on real-life romances, she serenaded us with great songs.
My favorite would be "Kahit Sandali". It's a radio-friendly tune and an original composition of Mr. Venhee Saturno. The song became huge that it brought Jennylyn's first album Living The Dream to platinum status. Two years later, Jennylyn released her second studio album Letting Go which contained the popular duet with Janno Gibbs, Moments of Love. In 2006, the album got a Gold award for selling more than 15,000 units, a feat so hard to achieve with the birth of digital downloads and piracy.
In 2008, she released a compilation album with GMA Records before switching record labels. She signed up with Viva Records in 2010 and released Love Is... She jumped ship to PolyEast and recorded her fifth studio album Forever By Your Side which is also a certified Gold awardee. That was in 2012.
This year, Jen is back in GMA Records and she is set to continue her music career with Never Alone, her sixth studio album. She shared that this album is 8 months in the making. It includes songs that were used as theme songs of three GMA shows. "Basta't Nandito Ka" is the official soundtrack of the Koreanovela "Return of the Wife" while "Kaya Ko Na" is the second OST of the Carla Abellana- Tom Rodriguez starrer "My Destiny". "Sa Hatinggabi", meanwhile, is the official song of Jennylyn's latest drama series Rhodora X.
While Jennylyn prepped up for her new soap with Camille Prats, she recorded another duet with Janno Gibbs entitled "Never Gonna Let You Go" and a song with ex-boyfriend Dennis Trillo, "After All." I had the chance to have a little chat with Jennylyn and she described her recording session with Dennis as an "OK" experience. "OK naman. OK naman kami..." she said and declined to elaborate.
Mercado's string of romances with Mark Herras, Patrick Garcia, Dennis Trillo and Luis Manzano became showbiz headlines that Jen is so used to answering questions about her love life. She was straightforward when she said she and Luis never had a closure. "Wag na. OK na yun. Di pa kami nakapag usap talaga ng maayos pero OK na yun. Maliit na bagay lang naman," she quipped. We asked what would be her song for Luis. At first she declined to pick a song but joked later on, saying "Kaya Ko Na" would be perfect fit.
"Abot Langit" is the carrier single of the album which also include other songs: "Never Alone", "We Don't Belong", "Sana", and a remake of Ella Saison's hit "Till My Heartaches End". The album is now available in record stores and the songs are available for digital downloads on iTunes, Spotify and Deezer.
Here's a portion of our interview with Jen.
