Choosing Which Clothes To Donate5:05 AM
While we have already established from my previous Electrolux Save and Share post (Letting Go Of Clothes We No Longer Use) the importance of donating unused clothes for more closet space and to help other people, we forgot to mention how to determine which clothes should go and which ones we'll keep.
There is an easy step to do this. I don't want you regretting after you've given away one important clothing item. It's bad to regret donating but there are still those oh-shit-I-still-need-that-shirt moments.
For Celebrity Chef Bruce Lim of the Asian Food Channel, the selection process is easy. If you have not worn it for over a month, donate it. Makes sense, right? If you're not reserving it for a special occasion, it would not take you a month to wear a new clothing item if you really want and need it.
Celebrity mom Cheska Garcia, on the other hand, has a tip for partygoers. "For people who have lots of show clothes or party dresses, they know that they can't donate it so they hold garage sales. They donate the money they make out of it." Now this multiplies your donation for you can now purchase clothes that are affordable but are usable for your beneficiaries.
For those who have lots to give away, my mom told be once that it is important to segregate. It also something that should not be rushed. She advised me to reserve days for the decision- making. What is no longer important for you today might be needed tomorrow, she said.
For Chef Bruce, non-government organizations and charity groups should know which clothes go to who. Cheska, meanwhile, goes back to the purpose of the donation. "Find out what are the things that are needed," she said. "Let's say mga pantulog, blankets for babies and the likes that are really needed during calamities. Know first what they need and then from there, you can segregate what you can give from your closet. The best thing is to be informed."
It's typhoon season in the Philippines and evacuees from the current Mayon Volcano situation need your unused clothes. At this point, it would be easy to say that what they need are thick blankets, mittens and coveralls for infants, and comfortable t-shirts and jackets for the adults. After all, you will be receiving a lot of gifts this Christmas. It would be nice to also share.
