Mike Tan on Kambal Sirena vs Dyesebel: "Our story is original"

10:29 PM

The ever straightforward Mike Tan admitted that his new show "Kambal Sirena" with Louise delos Reyes, Aljur Abrenica and Wynwyn Marquez lack star power when compared to the competing underwater series "Dyesebel". Anne Curtis, Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson and a support cast which include Dawn Zulueta and Eula Valdez will topbill ABS-CBN's take of the Mars Ravelo story. For Mike however, they may not have the big stars but he is proud that their mermaid story is original.

"Ang Dyesebel matagal na yan. Ang Dyesebel nagawa na ng ilang beses. In fact nagawa na ng GMA yan. Pinalitan lang nila ng artista. Sabihin na natin na mas sikat ang artista nila pero yung storya nila iisa lang. Ang Kambal Sirena mas bago, mas orihinal ang story," Starstruck Season 2's ultimate male survivor said. Mike added that aside from the beautiful imagery and the stunning set design of 'Kambal Sirena', he is excited about how GMA 7 has given a fresh story to the half-human, half-fish mythical creature.

Louise delos Reyes maybe considered a newbie in the industry to handle the title role but the Kapuso network has commissioned a powerful set of supporting cast. Bulking up what could be GMA's most expensive soap so far this year are Mickey Ferriols, Roxanne Guinoo, Gladys Reyes, Angelika dela Cruz, Lotlot de Leon, Tessie Tomas, Jay Manalo, Nova Villa, Chanda Romero, Polo Ravales, Pancho Magno and Yul Servo. Mark Reyes, the same person who brought us Encantadia and Atlantika, does the creative implementation of an original concept developed by RJ Nuevas. Dondon Santos directs.

Mike also shared that to overcome the pressure of what could be a tight contest on primetime starting March 10, he and the rest of the cast are undergoing workshops. Ratings are basic benchmark for a show's success but Mike said that they are not solely thinking of ratings while in preparation for "Kambal Sirena". "Kung ang iisipin mo ay puro rating lang, babagsak ka. Dapat isipin mo talaga paano pagandahin ang show, paano mo mapo-portray ng maayos ang character mo and the ratings will just follow."

To prepare for his role which will require him to be topless most of the time, Mike is going to the gym almost everyday and runs 5 kilometers every night. He shares how prepared Polo Ravales, Pancho Magno and Aljur Abrenica are for the soap and he is not willing to be the only one not physically ready.

Wrapping up the interview, Mike shared that they are all hoping that "Kamba Sirena" will be number 1 in its timeslot. "Naniniwala ako na matatalino na ang viewers. Importante pa rin sa kanila ang concept and orihinal na istorya."

'Kambal Sirena' will air on GMA 7's primetime starting March 10, 2014.
