Let Them Play Our Song

3:06 PM

Catch Nikki Gil & Lorenz Martinez in “They’re Playing Our Song” from February 8 to March 3 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium

OK! Call me clueless but I never thought the oftentimes Regine Velasquez-associated song "Fallin'" is part of a musical. But atleast last Tuesday, January 15, I found out through a performance from the talented Nikki Gil. She will soon play the sassy Sonya ("Sonia" in some references) and will exchange hilarious spoken and sung lines with Lorenz Martinez and other distinguished theater actors in "They're Playing Our Song".

No political elements, pictures of poverty, or some very serious stuff- except there's insomnia- this light and romantic musical promises to make us feel good and in love. The story begins with composer Vernon Gersch (to be played by Lorenz Martinez) meets female lyricist Sonya Walsk. The rest is "a token story of boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, and girl falls head over heels for boy" as how 9Works Theatrical, the show's producer, puts it. But the "hilarious scenes, one after the other" is what they want all of us to look forward to.

"They're Playing Our Song" is actually 35 years old with the original production staged in the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles in December of 1978. Lyrics were from Carole Bayer Sager and music are provided by Marvin Hamslisch. Since then, it was brought to 8 cities including Manila in 2000. The Singapore Repertory Theater Production staged this piece with Lea Salonga as Sonya and Singaporean actor Adrian Pang as Vernon at the AFP Theater from July to August 13, 2000. After almost 13 years, we now have the chance to see it again at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza from February 8 to March 3, 2013.

Nikki Gil, Lorenz Martinez and the rest of the cast perform for the press and bloggers at the presscon held at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.

"I'm actually very excited to start rehearsing for the show but at the same time, very nervous", Nikki Gil  shared about what could be her fourth theatrical production after Seussical The Musical, Legally Blonde- The Musical and Sweet Charity. "I love Lea and anything that has to do with her. She really brought the role of Sonya to life in the previous staging. I'll just have to bring something different to the table... my own version", Nikki added.

Nikki will be sharing the stage with Lorenz Martinez who is still playing the role of Lun Tha in the Resorts World Manila production of The King And I. He also did other productions like The Wedding Singer and Forbidden Broadway. Robbie Guevarra ("Rent" and "Wedding Singer") joins the team as the Artistic Director. On stage with Nikki and Lorenz are some of the finest theater actors today James Stacey, Reb Atadero, Noel Rayos, Peachy Atilano, Anna Santamaria and Jill Pena.

So are you ready to sing along? "Catch me I'm falling, falling fast again. Why do I always take a fall when I fall in love."
